Chapter Nine

Kali was riding a magnificent black horse through soft green meadows, moving swifter than the wind. Exhilaration swept through her, heightening every sense. She could taste the sweetness of the air as it rushed into her lungs, and she could feel the excitement soaring along every nerve ending.

She could ride like this forever, chasing rainbows and dreams and a thousand tomorrows. But her horse slowed and her heart began to race, a rapid drumming that filled her chest with anticipation. She knew that every step the animal took was leading her to a secret rendezvous with passion.

The horse neighed and came to an abrupt halt beneath a cluster of towering trees. Two strong arms wrapped around her waist and pulled her to the soft pine-straw carpet. And then she was in Zach’s arms and his lips were pressing into hers. Desire burned inside her, hot and wanton and she kissed him over and over until her lips ached and her lungs begged for breath.

He fell to the ground and pulled her down beside him. He undressed her slowly, his fingers brushing her breasts and slipping between her thighs. She ached for him, wanted to feel his flesh next to hers, needed him so desperately she could barely breathe.

And then she glimpsed the glint of the sun off cold metal and saw the barrel of a pistol aimed at her head. Zach disappeared, taking the passion and erotic cravings with him and leaving only a cold, hard knot of fear.

The sound of a gunshot roared in her ears as the bullet split her brain like an ax.

Kali awoke with a start and stared into the darkness for long, frightening moments as the images slowly receded into the dark corners of her mind. Just a nightmare, but the passion and the fear lingered. She stretched and felt the dampness on her skin. She’d broken into a cold sweat and her pajamas stuck to her like wet paint.

The puppy sleeping at her feet wakened, too. He crawled up beside her and snuggled against her, his head burrowing in the crook of her arm.

“Just a dream, my sweet puppy,” she whispered.

She held the tiny ball of wiggling life in her arms. Sweet puppy. That fit him. Chiot doux, if she remembered her college French correctly. “That’s a good name for you—maybe Chideaux for short, which gives it a nice Cajun flair. After all Colts Run Cross isn’t that far from Louisiana.”

His tail wagged appreciatively, and he crawled higher to lick her cheek. The action tangled his paws in the sheets and he whimpered in protest. She freed him from his predicament and held him close, thankful for his company as the cold fear of the killer and the hot passion from the dream mingled in her mind.

She closed her eyes and thought of Zach, her heart and body aching to cross the barriers that separated them. Two doors. A few feet.

A world of differences.

And therein lay the rub. He was here because he thought it was the right thing to do, not because of any overwhelming attraction he had for her.
